Bank statement PDF to Excel: review and export
InHand editorial · Updated 2026-10-09
InHand proposes rows from normal, scanned and mixed PDFs. PDF exports require explicit source review and exact reconciliation. If your bank offers a transaction CSV, you can import it instead; CSVs must pass the checks below. Printed English scans use local OCR. Handwriting is not supported; unclear or missing values require correction against the source.
When you have only a PDF
Use the PDF preview to inspect available text and compare dates, descriptions and amounts with the original. The app does not provide PDF column-range mapping, date-range selection or automatic PDF-derived downloads. For a source-reviewed export, open every PDF page, independently count source transactions per page, confirm each working row and check the currency, period and source opening/closing balances. All figures must reconcile exactly. Correct OCR errors against the original. Choose CSV for Excel, QuickBooks CSV, QIF or Tally XML preparation; then check the destination preview.
Prepare a CSV that can be checked
InHand CSV export is conditional. The source must identify a statement period within its first three records, include opening and closing balance summary rows in the mapped Balance column, and have every populated row classified. Dates, currency and amounts must be supported, and exact reconciliation must pass. Map Date, Description, Amount (signed) or Debit/Credit, and Balance. Use an explicit date order; 03/04/2026 is ambiguous without it. Do not mix account currencies.
Fictional CSV example
This example is synthetic, not a bank compatibility fixture. It includes the period, both source balances and one signed transaction. Map Date, Description, Amount (INR) and Balance (INR); then review every row and the checks. A similar file is not guaranteed to pass if its extra cells, dates, currency or totals differ.
Period 2026-09-01 to 2026-09-30,Date,Description,Amount (INR),Balance (INR) ,,Opening Balance,,100.00 ,2026-09-10,Purchase,-10.00,90.00 ,,Closing Balance,,90.00
Review and export the eligible CSV
Open the CSV in Statement Studio, confirm or correct its column mapping, inspect the source values and resolve every notice. Export remains locked unless the period, source balances, dates, row coverage, supported currency and reconciliation all pass. When allowed, choose standard CSV for Excel, QuickBooks CSV or QIF as needed, then inspect the resulting rows in Excel before relying on them. A successful balance check is not proof of complete extraction.
For context, read the balance review guide and consult Microsoft’s CSV import guidance. Keep the original statement and a separately reviewed export.
